Karak Korps

Karak Korps are a mercenary outfit, with a reputation of hiring just about anybody, relying more on brute force and overwhelming numbers than on talent.  The idea is that the fittest survive, to become what is admittedly a well-honed officer cadre for the boots on the ground.  They can be found throughout The Fringe, mostly as law enforcement contractors.  They do however have specialised combat divisions, these made up of well-experienced fighters with cutting edge equipment.

Present for several decades in The Threads, Karak Korps would have continued to play a rather low-key background role, if it were not for the tragedy of the Harvest of Yellow.  Karak seem to feed off the tragedies of others.

The Harvest of Yellow was passing through the Thread's Weak Point at the exact moment the first "Solar Chord Pulse" irradiated the star system.  The ship's jump to Unity space was scrambled, diverting the ship to the Fringe planet named Martin's Fault.  The shock from the bad jump killed most of the crew and left the majority of the others half-mad.

By a stroke of (bad) luck, a Karak Korps patrol just happened to respond first to the distress call, no doubt hoping for some easy pickings.  Those first on the scene quickly realised that something unusual had happened, which the crew's demented babbling quickly confirmed.  Communications went up and down the food chain, and Karak illegally got its hands on the vessel's black box.  The Harvest of Yellow was promptly scuttled into Martin's sun.

Initial analysis of the black box provided Karak Korps with first-hand information on the nature of the EM pulse, and sufficiently precise data to allow them, and them alone, to compensate for its effects on C.271 XIV's Weak Point.  This implies that Karak Korps vessels can get to The Threads at less risk than any others, and with greater precision, avoiding long in-system travel.

Karak Korps has a rather unique opportunity to become one of the major players, but it has to move fast.  It is planning to rapidly shift its entire corporate apparatus into The Threads, and it is unlikely anyone will be asking for permission...
