Background :

Acastus is the eldest son of Pelias of Iolcos, a city of Boetia.  His father took control of Iolcos by force, and in doing so, drove out Jason, captain of the Argo.

It is therefore somewhat surprising that Acastus has ended up alongside a potential rival.  The story goes like this.  Acastus was in business with a man known system-wide, Peleus, and father of the just as famous Achilles.  Their family were one of the pretendants to the title of Dynast on Boetia, before the Labdacides won that honour.

When Peleus visited his business partner, Acastus' wife, Astydamia, tried to seduce him.  Peleus refused the young woman's advances, harsh words were exchanged and as vengeance, she told her husband that his guest had raped her.

Acastus took Peleus on a hunting trip, only to slaughter his bodyguards and then abandon him to a slow and cruel death on the maenad-infested slopes of Mount Pelion.  Perhaps fortunately for the house of Pelias, the noble was rescued by the mutant Chiron.

Astydamia accepted the death sentence, if that of Acastus was reduced to exile.  Acastus was ostracised, an event of which Jason heard.  It seemed to him an excellent idea to offer the young man a place aboard the Argo, as his Security Officer.  He might eventually prove a useful ally, or a means to call in a favour from Pelias; and if not, it is the ideal place to keep an eye on his possible rival.
