Background :

Pollux is twin sister (or half-sister, depending on what you believe) to another crew member of the Argo, Castor.  They are collectively known as the Gemini.  Both were born aboard a spaceship, after the Dynast and his family - including his pregnant wife - made a bold trip, for reasons known only to themselves, to observe up close the Olympos disk itself.  It is said that this is why both feel so at home among the stars.

What is curious, is that their mother, Leda, was not expecting twins when they set out.  Upon their birth, their father, the Dynast of Laconia, proclaimed that Zeus himself had impregnated Leda, and that Pollux was his child.  The skeptical mumble that the Dynast has much to gain from claiming Divine blood in his line, and that it was nothing more than medical error, or indeed an outright hoax.

Pollux took a lot of flak for this during her early childhood, and became a teenager with a quick temper, who struggled to contain her violent outbursts.  Her twin sister, of more circumspect and calm nature, encouraged her to take up martial arts, in which Pollux excelled.

The two are absolutely inseparable.  The city of Sparta, capital of the planet Laconia, has a custom which requires all those at the cusp of adult life to leave its walls for five years, with only the clothes on their back and a wooden club, and fend entirely for themselves.  They are considered as ostracised, denied the safety of the  civilised world and the protection of law.  Only after completing this initiation can they return as full members of the community; the death toll is considerable.

Castor and Pollux figured, in for a drakhma, in for a talent.  If they were ostracised, they might as well act like it.  After a series of hair-raising adventures, they ended up signing on with the crew of the Argo.

As it turns out, two rivals of theirs, Lyncea and Ida, had done exactly the same thing...sparks are likely to fly...
